BLUE RIDGE REGIONAL AIRPORT
Airport Road Relocation & Runway Extension Design
Eden & Associates has assisted Blue Ridge Airport in a push for a runway extension for several years. Dating back to the Airport Layout Plan update, our staff has made the case that the Airport needs to extend its runway to sufficiently serve users in the region. Upon approval of the ALP, E&A was able to move forward with the NEPA-required Environmental Assessment as the first step in executing an extension to 6000’. This process was completed well ahead of schedule in only 15 months. E&A also helped facilitate local Harvest Foundation funding to prepare the design documents on an accelerated timeframe to leverage the availability of FAA supplemental funds.
A state-maintained roadway must be relocated to accommodate the new runway and air protection zones. Throughout design, our team has prioritized constructability and value engineering. Multiple road layouts were analyzed to minimize curves and keep construction costs down.
Additionally, the project design presents phasing options with bid alternates to give flexibility during bid and award to make best use of available funding.
Grant coordination has been key throughout the entire process. Though the Airport has been able to utilize local and state funds to expedite the timeline of construction, all FAA grant assurances must be adhered to in order to enable future reimbursement and funding of the construction phase. Key to this coordination has been budgeting and cost estimating due to the FAA’s Benefit Cost Analysis requirements.
