BLUE RIDGE REGIONAL AIRPORT Airport Road Relocation & Apron Expansion

Blue Ridge Airport has suffered from a lack of terminal apron space for years.  In order to expand the ramp in this area, the VDOT-maintained Airport Road needed to be relocated, as well as associated utilities, well, and drainfield. E&A helped facilitate DOAV funding to prepare the design documents on an accelerated timeframe to leverage the availability of FAA supplemental funds.  Our staff assisted the Airport in applying for that supplemental funding which was granted at the end of 2019. MTV was one of only two airports in Virginia to receive a portion of these funds. Design documents were produced on an accelerated timeline to use those funds in the first available construction season.  This project was a very tedious design as it included close coordination with VDOT staff, specifications, and traffic management for the relocation of an existing state-maintained road.   It was designed to include a bid additive for the apron expansion to maintain flexibility as the bids were analyzed compared to the available grant amount.  Due in large part to the coordinated design and bid timing, the FAA was able to fund the entire road relocation and apron construction at once.   Throughout construction, E&A has facilitated VDOT coordination, plat creation including easements, land dedication and right-of-way abandonment. Our staff has also coordinated the grant administration and reimbursement with both state and federal agencies.
