CHARLOTTE DOUGLAS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Deicing Pad & South Crossfield Taxiway
As part of the overall design team, E&A was tasked specifically to provide Alternatives Analysis, Earthwork Optimization, Airfield Utilities, and general project support.Initial analysis tasks included potential expansion of the existing multi-modal facility south of West Blvd. E&A developed preliminary exhibits for expansion and developed schematic earthwork analysis for CLT staff evaluation. The anticipated alignment for this West Blvd relocation occupies the area analyzed by E&A.The anticipated construction required extensive suitable borrow material to meet the anticipated finished grades. E&A provided engineering design services focused on identifying various alternative sources of borrow materials along with financial and scheduling impacts with each option.
E&A then developed construction documents to provide grading and drainage design development for construction. The documents focused on borrow areas, hauling routes / staging areas, stockpile areas, and various details and notes needed to provide contractors with a thorough understanding for the requirements for construction. The goals for engineering support included:• Embankment / Excavation phasing and stockpiling – minimize redundant earthwork operations / maximize schedule and efficiency.• AOA – non-AOA considerations – minimize impacts to airfield operations while providing flexibility for contractors to complete the project in a timely manner.• Part 77 Imaginary Surface evaluation – ensure any permanent or temporary embankment will not penetrate Part 77 imaginary surfaces.
