VIRGINIA TECH MONTGOMERY EXECUTIVE AIRPORT
Runway 12-30 Extension
Extending the Virginia Tech-Montgomery Executive Airport (BCB) runway to 5,500 ft and improving it from B-II to C-II design standards is amongst the most complex projects at a Virginia general aviation airport. The coordination involves multiple agencies, jurisdictions, funding streams, environmental permitting requirements, and integrated construction schedules. The project includes:
• Coordination with VDOT on a new grade- separated interchange, including reconfiguration of the area’s Huckleberry Trail• Relocation of an arterial road and a collector road,• Relocation of major gas, telecommunication, and power utilities• Acquisition of University land and relocation of the entire the Dairy Science Program • Acquisition of six (6) commercial properties for RPZ,• Coordinated Master Planning between Airport, Corporate Research Center, and Virginia Tech• Relocation and provision of new University Athletic Fields• Successful Environmental Assessment coordinated with both FAA and VDOT with a NEPA process resulting in a FONSI• Provision of 1,000-ft long RSA beyond runway thresholds on both runway ends• Correcting runway curve to meet C-II standards• Extending Pavement from existing 4,550’ to 5,500’• Multi-year AIP funded project that utilized initial DOAV bridge loans to fund preliminary services• Use of bid alternatives to increase contractor competition and lower construction price.
